Outstanding singers from 58 Iowa high schools will perform at the annual Meistersinger Honor Choir Concert Saturday, Jan. 26, at Wartburg College.

The high school honor choir singers will perform at a 7:30 p.m. concert in Neumann Auditorium, which also will feature world-renowned bass baritone Simon Estes, Wartburg professor and artist in residence; selected soloists from the honor choir; and the Wartburg vocal ensembles — Wartburg Choir; Castle Singers jazz group; Ritterchor men’s choir, and St. Elizabeth Chorale, a women’s choir.

Tickets are $5 at the door.

The honor choir will sing a variety of African-American spirituals by noted composer Stacey Gibbs, the featured guest clinician at the daylong festival for the high school students. His music has been performed by choirs and at festivals throughout the United States, Europe and Africa. He will share concert conducting duties with Dr. Lee Nelson, director of the Wartburg choirs.

The concert also will include world premieres of Gibbs’ compositions — an arrangement of “He’s Got the Whole World” with Estes as soloist; “Shenandoah” and “I Want to Be Ready” sung by the Wartburg Choir, and “Battle of Jericho” performed by the Ritterchor.

The honor choir also will debut a composition by Connor Koppin, a Wartburg senior from Mason City.

Earlier in the day the honor choir students will work with Gibbs and members of the Wartburg music faculty, attend clinics and rehearse for the concert.

Gibbs will lead rehearsals Thursday that are open to the public in the Wartburg Chapel — with the Ritterchor, 3:45-4:40 p.m., and the Wartburg Choir, 5-6:15 p.m.

Gibbs’ discussion of his music with high school music directors is open to the public Saturday, 11:15 a.m., in Rada Orchestra Hall in the Bachman Fine Arts Center.
