Overview Sources clarify unfamiliar terms or ideas, and usually provide a list or bibliography of other recommended sources. They help to narrow a big topic or give you topic ideas.

  • AccessScience: Online encyclopedia of science and technology.
  • Annals of American History: Historical topic source with primary sources.
  • CQ Electronic Library: CQ Researcher, CQ Weekly & government databases.
  • Encyclopædia Britannica Online: Online version of the popular encyclopedia.
  • Grove Music Online: Encyclopedia of classical and popular music.
  • Finding Sources include databases and indexes that can help you locate subject and topic specific sources such as journals and newpaper articles and books.

    Fact Sources are additional reference materials that provide definitions, statistics, timetables, biographical summaries, literary terms, and other types of factual information.

  • American National Biography Online: National biographical reference work.
  • Classical Music Library: Streaming music database of classical music.
  • Facts on File World News Digest: Information on national and world events from 1940 to present.
  • Gallup Brain: Contains all Gallup Poll data past and present.
  • Literature Resource Center: Biographical and critical information about writers.
  • Meriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary: Online version of the print dictionary.
  • Music-In-Print Series: Database of print music for a variety of music genres.
  • NetLibrary: Database of thousands of eBooks.
  • Oxford English Dictionary: Dictionary specializing in word origins.
  • Oxford Reference: Full text of articles from reference sources.
  • Ulrichs Periodical's Directory: Informational directory for journals, magazines, newspapers and other periodical sources.

    Gateways and Portals are research tools that guide you to recommended web sites.

  • Mona Lisa Resources: Gateway to websites recommended by Wartburg librarians, faculty, staff and students grouped by topic.
  • Knight Knowledge: Directory to sources for common questions.
  • Lii.org: Librarians' Internet Index.
  • INFOMINE: Scholarly sites on the Internet.
  • The Gateway to Educational Materials: Education site by the government.
  • The Scout Report: Internet Newsletter listing credible websites.
  • Library Catalogs

    Offers coverage of social science databases, including Sociological Abstracts, Social Services Abstracts, Physical Education Index and ERIC. Provides databases for searching for scholarly information in books, journals, periodicals and articles. EBSCOhost's main database is Academic Search Premier but also has databases pertaining to health, education and business. Electronic Journals Directory Electronic scholarly texts from various journals in the humanities, social sciences, and economics. Includes news, business, environmental,  legal, medical, political, statistical, and general reference full-text sources. Over 100 language and subject dictionaries and reference titles in a searchable database. Project MUSE offers electronic access to nearly 250 quality journal titles from 40 scholarly publishers in the humanities and social sciences. OCLC catalog of books, web resources, and other material worldwide.
