Internships

Once you have read the responsibilities and procedures below, you may click here to view internship opportunities.

Students should follow the following procedures to organize their internship experience:

- The Internship Coordinator is Monica Severson (-8469 or monica.severson@wartburg.edu) and she is the campus contact person and/or faculty sponsor. Each student wanting to do an internship must see Monica Severson before starting the process.
- Monica Severson will provide ideas/contacts for internships but it is the responsibility of the student to secure an internship.
- The student must obtain an Internship Learning Contract from the Registrar's Office or it can be downloaded. Severson will complete the Internship Learning Contract objectives and responsibilities. The student will need to obtain the necessary signatures and returned completed contract to the Registrar's Office for approval. Both the student and Severson will receive notification when the internship has been approved.
- Severson will send internship information and evaluation forms to the site supervisor. Therefore, Severson needs the name of the site supervisor, title, address and phone number so materials can be sent and progress checked during the internship.
- During the internship the student is responsible to the site supervisor. The student must keep a weekly journal of their learning experiences and reflections on the experiences. The journal is also an excellent place to keep track of hours completed for the internship. A one credit internship requires 140 hours of work and a two credit internship requires 280 hours. Make sure you keep track of hours as very often the site supervisor will not do this.
- At the completion of the internship the student must turn in their weekly journal and the site supervisor must return the evaluation forms. Severson will give the student a grade when both the journal and evaluation forms are in. If both the journal and evaluation forms are not turned in, an incomplete will be given for a grade.
- Application Deadlines: Fall Term internships - previous May; Winter Term internships - previous December; May Term internships - previous March; Summer Terms internships - previous May.

Supervisor's responsibilities:

- Meet with the student prior to starting the internship to set a starting date, possible compensation, and working hours.
- Determine the student's responsibilities they need to fulfill during the internship.
- Provide a learning environment for the student compatible with the objectives of the internship.
- Adequately supervise the student during the course of the internship.
- Continue to provide training and feedback throughout the experience.
- Complete a formal written evaluation of the student at the end of internship.
