The Health, Physical
Education, and Athletics Department offers a variety of opportunities
for possible career choices. Health and physical education programs
are oriented toward the teaching profession and culminate in a
student teaching experience.
Fitness Management Major (PDF)
A degree in fitness management will prepare you for positions in health
clubs, hospital wellness programs, corporate fitness centers, and school
wellness programs.
Fitness management majors must complete an internship where they
observe, plan, and implement fitness programs in an actual leadership,
supervisory, or administrative capacity.
Physical Education Major (PDF)
A physical education major will prepare you to teach and coach in elementary
and secondary schools. Wartburg offers a K-12 teaching certification program
in physical education and a 7-12 endorsement in health.
A 14-week student teaching experience takes place in local schools with a
seven-week placement in elementary PE and a seven-week placement in
secondary PE with the possibility of teaching in a health class.
Program goals:
- To prepare
students to become quality physical education teachers through
the acquisition of knowledge pertaining to the general functioning
of the human body and fitness testing.
- To prepare students to become quality fitness/wellness
professionals through the acquisition of knowledge pertaining
to the general functioning of the human body and fitness testing.
- To develop an appreciation of the role of physical activity
in the balance of life through physical education and fitness/wellness
programs.
- To prepare students to successfully complete their student
teaching and/or internship experience, where they can start to
display and incorporate the values and ethics of their profession.
