History Papers

Writing History Papers

This comprehensive website, from Dartmouth College, provides useful tips for writing history papers. It talks about two kinds of history papers: those using primary sources, and those using secondary sources. It is geared towards both novice and advanced writers in that it gives very simple directions on the basics, such as writing arguments, but also addresses more complex concerns, such as being careful of biases and addressing evidence that contradicts the argument being made.

Professional Organizations

American Historical Association
The American Historical Association (AHA) describes itself as “The professional association for all historians.” This is a useful site for those interested in wondering what they can do with their history degrees, professional ethics, and graduate programs (and eventually jobs in the history profession).

The Organization of American Historians The Organization of American Historians, or OAH, “is the largest learned society devoted to the study of American history.”

National Council on Public History This organization works “to enhance the public's awareness of the value and uses of history and to serve the growing community of public historians.”
