Dr. Fred Waldstein ’74

Waldstein played on four Iowa Conference championship basketball teams and is among the school’s all-time scoring and rebound leaders with 1,096 points and 725 rebounds. He was a three-time All-Iowa Conference selection and a unanimous choice on the first team in 1974. He was twice named to the GTE Academic All-America team and was a first team pick on the NAIA District 15 basketball team his senior year. He also was named to the U.S.A. All-Lutheran All-America second team in 1974. After graduation, he received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and completed a Ph.D. degree in political science at Washington University, St. Louis, Mo. He currently holds the Burling Chair in Leadership and is director of the Institute for Leadership Education at Wartburg. Two years ago, he received Iowa’s Distinguished Service Award in Volunteerism. He is the immediate past president of Humanities Iowa and serves as first vice president of the American Association of State Service Commissions.
