Kathy M. Smith Phelan ’90

Waukesha, Wis.
Smith was a four-year letterwinner in basketball and
the Most Valuable Player of the Iowa Conference in
1990. She also earned All-IIAC honors in 1988. She
was the Knights’ MVP in both 1988 and 1990.
She was an honorable mention All-American in 1990,
the same year she led the Knights to their first Iowa
Conference championship in women’s basketball.
She still holds school records for best field goal
percentage in a season, 57.0, and for a career, 54.5.
She ranks fourth among all scorers in Wartburg women’s
basketball with 1,360 points. She earned a medical
degree at the University of Iowa and completed her
residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin Family
Practice in Waukesha. She has been employed at the
National Indian Health Service in Alaska and was a
Locum Tenum Physician in Nashua, N.H., before returning
to the Waukesha Health Care Family Practice in Hartland,
Wis. She also has had mission experiences in Bangladesh,
Kenya, and Guatemala.
