Retired teacher and coach
Kiester, Minn.
A native of Waverly, Platte was a three-sport letterwinner
at Wartburg and later became a stand-out coach at
Kiester, Minn., where he retired in 1983. He lettered
four years in football and was a two-time All-Iowa
Conference selection in 1949 and 1950. He also lettered
three times in basketball and four times in track.
He was the Iowa Conference two-mile champion for three
years, missing only in his junior year, when he was
injured. The two-mile school record he set in 1950
stood until 1963. He was named the college’s
Outstanding Athlete in 1947 and won the Tofte Athletic
Trophy in 1950. In 1974, he was the Alumni Coach of
the Year after leading his Kiester High School track
team to the Minnesota State Class B track title the
year before. He also coached boys and girls basketball
and football at Kiester and started the girls interscholastic
basketball program there in 1974.
