Although he lettered in both basketball and football,
Hellerich was best known for his exploits on the gridiron
and became an All-American in that sport. He transferred
to Wartburg after playing his first year at William
and Mary. He was a two-time All-IIAC and All-NAIA
District 15 linebacker, leading the Knights to their

A football injury cost him his senior season on the
hardcourt. He received the Voecks Award his senior
year. Before going into business, he was an assistant
football coach at South Dakota State, where he also
earned a master’s degree in physical education
and recreation.
