Dean played on the volleyball court and softball field in the early 1980s for Wartburg. Volleyball was where she shone brightest, earning team Most Valuable Player awards in 1983 and 1984 and first team all-Iowa Conference honors in 1982, 1983 and 1984. Dean still holds program records for most sets in a season (1,167) and best setting percentage for a season (.973), both of which occurred in 1981. In softball, she appeared in 73 games and hit .208 with 40 hits and 13 RBIs.
