Brandt was a tWo¬time Iowa Conference wrestling champion, at 147 pounds in 1953 and at 177 pounds in 1954. The conference then dropped wrestling until 1959. He was undefeated with a 28-0 record in dual meets during his career. In football, he was an All-Iowa Conference guard tWice and in 1957 was voted the league's outstanding lineman.
