France: University of Montpellier

Montpellier has long been a historic crossroad for European, Mediterranean, and North African civilizations. In the area nearby are Neolithic sites, Roman settlements, walled medieval towns, Mediterranean beaches, and the ecological and wildlife treasure of Camargue. It is a short trip to Barcelona and the gateway to Spain.

Montpellier boasts the University, a historic inner medieval center, modern businesses and shopping, and a typical central plaza, the hub of city life, with theaters and sidewalk cafes. It is an artistic and cultural center, playing important industrial and technological roles in the European Community.

Through this Partneship for Service Learning program students learn the equivalent of two to three semesters of French at the University of Montpellier. Through community service, students learn about the French system of social services. Students will serve 15 - 20 hours per week in an established service agency. Examples include teaching English as a second language, tutoring, day care, and social services with the poor and needy.
