Forensics Team

Mission: Wartburg College Forensics is dedicated to the development of communication skills that apply to personal, professional, and community life through experience on a competitive collegiate circuit with opportunities for leadership and service.

Aristotle said there are three types of discourse; epideictic (ceremonial speech), deliberative (the type of debate we expect to see in congressional decision making), and forensic (discourse or arguments to be used in the courts). Today the term is often used loosely and many assume that forensics refers to forensic medicine. We use the term forensics to refer to collegiate speech competition. There are many different categories that an individual can compete in. There are limited preparation events (impromptu & extemporaneous speaking), platform events (informative, persuasive & after-dinner speaking), critical events (communication analysis) and interpretive events (prose, poetry, drama, dramatic duo & program oral interpretation).
