Exploring Majors

How do you choose a major?
Ultimately the only one who can choose the right major for you is you! However, there are many support services on campus which can facilitate this process. Career Services has a variety of interest inventories and various materials to help you pinpoint your interests and possible corresponding career choices. Pathways Center consultants can show you information about every major offered at Wartburg and on occasion hosts an Exploring Majors Fair to give exploring students an opportunity to speak with students in the various majors on campus.

Some other other options include: talking to faculty members in departments of classes which you enjoy, speaking with students about their choice of major, join clubs or organizations, visit Career Services to explore your career goals, and take advantage of fairs and workshops.

How do you declare a major?
A declaration of major form is available by clicking here. Your adviser can assist you with filling the form out and they must sign it.  If you wish to change majors and thus need a new adviser, you may simply go to the Registrar's Office and tell them of your plans. They will then have for advising file sent to their office. You may either choose a different adviser or ask that one be assigned to you. Pathways Center consultants can assist you in every step of this process.

When do you need to declare a major?
Although there is not a specific deadline for declaring a major, it is recommended that the sooner one does the better.  Typically midway through your second year your adviser will encourage you to begin a serious consideration of what major you want to choose. By this time you should have completed most of the Wartburg Plan of Essential Education courses and many majors will begin their sequenced courses at this time.
