World-renowned opera star and Iowa native Simon Estes performed with his South African high school choir at the Celebrate Africa: Grand Finale concert of the World Cup in Johannesburg, July 9, two days prior to the championship game.
Estes and students from the Simon Estes Music High School near Cape Town were among a star-studded international lineup headlined by Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli and Canadian rock star Bryan Adams. The event in the 12,000-seat Coca Cola Dome was the last in a series of World Cup concerts endorsed by the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). Estes, distinguished professor and artist in residence at Wartburg College and a professor at Iowa State University, was asked to perform by FIFA President Sepp Blatter.
The performance included a world premiere of "Save the Children, Save their Lives." This new song, along with 19 of Simon's favorite spirituals and folk songs can be found on his new CD. $5 of the proceeds from each CD purchased through Wartburg will benefit Wartburg College Orange Opportunity Scholarships. Other proceeds will:
Support the Simon Estes Music High School in Cape Town, South Africa.
