English
and Modern Language Majors and Courses
If you major in one
of the modern language areas, your studies will be shaped by international
experiences designed to increase your language proficiency and immerse
you in another culture.
First, you will take part in a May
Term experience, where students spend four to eight weeks abroad,
combining intensive language study with faculty-led excursions to
sites of historical and cultural interest. During May Term, French/French
studies majors go to a language institute in Paris; German/German
studies majors visit several cities in Germany; and Spanish/ Spanish
studies majors travel to Cuernavaca, Mexico.
As a junior, you will
study abroad for at least a full semester or, in the case of
French, German, and Spanish majors, for a full year. Many students
choose to study at the University of Grenoble in France; the Universities
of Bonn or Jena in Germany; and the University of the Americas in
Puebla, Mexico, or the Center for Cultural Studies in Seville, Spain.
