Descriptions
Philosophy of Church Music
This core course will be taught throughout the two years, interacting
with all courses and culminating in a paper in which the student
presents a personal philosophy of church music.
Leadership of Congregational
Song
This course will be taught over two years. It includes techniques
of leadership for congregational singing using a wide variety of
musical styles. Concurrent tracks are offered in your choice of
organ, piano, guitar, or cantor (voice).
Hymnody of the Christian
Church
A comprehensive review of hymnody with special reference to The
Hymnal 1982 and Lutheran Book of Worship, as well as supplemental
collections.
Principles of Choral Leadership
This course will be taught over two years. Year one will include
choral conducting techniques. Year two will focus on voice training
for choirs.
Resources for Effective Music
Ministry
Attention to the congregation’s need, the pastoral skills
of musicians, staff relationships, developing local and regional
resources, working with volunteer choirs or ensembles (children,
youth, and adult), and arranging hymns and service music as anthems.
Teaching New Music to the
Congregation
Includes analysis of music as well as techniques useful in introducing
new texts and music. Participants will teach new music to each other
during classes.
Liturgy and Music
Exploration of the church year, lectionary, history and theology
of church music, with practical application for participants.
