Faculty Grants for Course Development
In Vocation, Service-Learning, Church Professions & Ethics

Request for Proposals
Through the Discovering and Claiming Our Callings initiative, funding is available to support faculty developing and/or redesigning courses with an intentional focus on service-learning, church professions, ethics, or other initiative goals. Possible uses of the funds include: making contacts and designing courses for service-learning and community engagements; designing community-based research courses and projects; developing new or substantially revised courses with a focus on students preparing for church vocations; adding a substantial ethics component/module to a course or major; revising capstone courses to include a focus on vocation; and/or attending a conference that will support curricular work in one of these (or related) areas. No grant may exceed $2600.

Proposal Submission
There is no application form, but a written proposal (no more than 3 pages) is required. The proposal should include:

1. A description of your plans for course development, including a time-table.
2. A basic budget. This may include funds for travel, conferences, resources, and a stipend (if work is during a non-contractual period).

The purpose of this course development support is to promote innovative and effective learning through experiential and civically-oriented opportunities. Please call Anna Bartel if you have ideas or questions you'd like to discuss.

Developing a Service-Learning Course
A service learning course is a structured experience in which students:

  • work collaboratively with community partners to define the service
  • engage in an organized service activity that meets identified community needs
  • reflect on the service activity in order to demonstrate successful accomplishment of identified learning objectives, an enhanced understanding of the community, and a strengthened sense of civic responsibility and philanthropy (This is the key difference between service learning and volunteerism
