Commission Wartburg

Progress Reports

At Homecoming 2007 festivities, Wartburg College concluded Commission Wartburg, a long-range, constituent-based strategic planning process established by the Board of Regents in February 1999. It represented the most comprehensive planning effort in Wartburg’s history. The Final Task Force Reports mark the seventh and final report on Commission Wartburg.

During their work, 235 alumni and friends who served as Commission members were guided by framing questions established by the Wartburg Faculty Council. The members examined Wartburg’s strengths and needs; analyzed the current and future environment in which Wartburg must compete; heard the viewpoints of faculty, staff, students, and community members; and examined and generated reams of information.

The work of the eight Commission task forces was completed in May 2000 and in October 2000 the Board of Regents announced the “Priorities for the Future.” Since that time, 97 percent of the 266 recommendations have been fulfilled.

Commission Wartburg not only reaffirmed Wartburg’s rich heritage and traditions, but created a blueprint for the future advancement of the College. The Commission has shaped the College’s ability to fulfill and strengthen its mission of preparing students for lives of leadership, service, faith, and learning. Commission Wartburg provided a framework for the Board of Regents to develop long-term financial goals for the College. Several recommendations became key components of Campaign Wartburg, a comprehensive, multi-faceted fundraising campaign that raised $90.3 million for the College’s endowment, facilities and special projects, and the annual fund. Wartburg celebrated the successful conclusion of the Campaign as part of Homecoming 2006 festivities.

A charitable grant from the Franklin I. and Irene List Saemann Foundation enabled Wartburg College to create and administer Commission Wartburg and the subsequent prioritization process. The foundation’s trustees are the descendants of Pastor Georg M. Grossmann, the College’s founder and first president.

Wartburg has a tradition of academic excellence and institutional strength and is faithfully committed to continual improvement. Thanks to the ideas and resources of Commission members, alumni and friends, and faculty, staff, and students, the College is positioned for a promising future.

A four-color publication, the Final Report of Commission Wartburg, captures some of the exciting ways the Commission has had a significant impact on campus infrastructure, programs, and staffing over the past eight years. Commission Wartburg Featured at Harvard
The Commission Wartburg process was chosen as the basis of a case study by Harvard University's Graduate School of Education. In January 2003, President Jack Ohle and Board Chairman Fred Hagemann traveled to Boston to make a presentation at the Seminar on Advancement Leadership for Presidents, offered by Harvard Institutes for Higher Education and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. Approximately 50 college and university presidents from across the nation attended the seminar. The case has been included in Harvard’s higher education case study catalog for general instructional use.
