Tornado Assistance Banner

In the spirit of our mission, the Wartburg College community actively seeks to be of service to those affected by the recent storms and tornados in Northeast Iowa.  These storms have hit close to home in so many ways.  We offer our prayers and support to those in need, and to those who are giving of themselves in service.  We particularly remember those in the Wartburg family who have been directly touched by these events.

We understand that many in the Wartburg community are already involved in recovery efforts and we hope this website may be a place to share ideas and opportunities to serve.  For posting that information, please contact Dr. Dan Kittle in the Center for Community (CCE) Engagement.  Dr. Kittle can be reached at the following:

This will be a long process to recovery.  The clean up is in full gear and several reports make it clear that the volunteer response has been strong.  Wartburg can play an important role in this process, particularly when the short-term disaster response teams and agencies have had to move on; this may be in several weeks or months.  You will find updates and announcements here and through Faculty/Staff news.

Those agencies coordinating relief efforts request that you do not drive by affected areas unless you have to, and that before attempting to go to the area to serve you must call an organization to plan your visit.  You will find ways to be of service on this website.  You may also contact the Iowa Concern Hotline at 800-447-1985.

VOLUNTEERING

As stated above, the volunteer response has been strong.  In fact, many of you have already been to these areas doing service.  As the CCE has been in contact with relief agencies they have said that volunteer needs change on a day-to-day basis.  We do know that volunteers are needed to assist farmers in removing debris from their fields.  The CCE is coordinating with the Butler Country Extension Office to have Wartburg faculty, staff and students serve for at least one afternoon in the next week or so removing debris.  An announcement should be coming soon.

Reminder:  With the approval of their supervisor, Wartburg staff may take up to four hours (half-day) of volunteer pay for service.  Wartburg staff are encouraged to consider using this time in service for those affected by the storm.  Again, a coordinated opportunity for Wartburg participation will be announced soon.

Donations for Dawn Wiegmann, director of wellness and health promotions, and her family are being accepted through the Campus Ministry Office in response to the recent tornado that struck their home in Parkersburg on Sunday.  About half of the Wiegmann home was destroyed, though it appears that it will be a total loss. The garage and vehicles were apparently spared.  The family is staying at the home of Dawn's parents in Allison.  If you would like to make a monetary donation to the Wiegmann family, please make checks payable to Wartburg College and send them to the Campus Ministry Office.  Receipts will be given to those making a donation.  Thanks to Pastors Larry Trachte and Ramona Bouzard for their leadership in organizing this collection.
