Habitat
for Humanity Put your faith to work on urban redevelopment projects organized through the national Habit for Humanity organization. Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7). The mission of the Campus Chapters program is to capture the imagination, energy, and hope of students in order to productively and effectively involve them in the work of Habitat for Humanity International. Campus chapters have three main functions: educating the campus and local community about affordable housing issues and the work of Habitat for Humanity, building and rehabilitating houses in partnership with Habitat for Humanity affiliates and homeowners, and raising funds for the work of Habitat for Humanity. Never flag in zeal, be aglow with the Spirit, serve the Lord (Romans 12:11, RSV). Wartburg's Habitat chapter is very active! The chapter's biggest, most recent project was work on the Habitat house that was built in Waverly. Work started on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 2002, and the home was dedicated fall 2003. Wartburg's chapter built the walls during the winter in the Physical Plant, and spent many weekends at the building site during the spring. The cost of the lot that the house was built on was $3,000. Wartburg's Habitat chapter raised $1,500 toward the purchase, which was then matched by the college. Students involved stated that "it was a neat feeling to know that we purchased the lot that house now sits on!" He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever (2 Samuel 7:13, RSV). Faith is a big part of Wartburg's expression groups, and Habitat members' f aith is a big part of the organization. Members strive to glorify God in all they do! Out of them shall come songs of thanksgiving, and the voices of those who make merry. I will multiply them, and they shall not be few; I will make them honored, and they shall not be small (Jeremiah 30:19, RSV). Currently, Wartburg's chapter of Habitat for Humanity has over 150 members, and they continue to add new members. |
