Society
of Collegiate Journalists
Purpose
The purposes of this organization are to recognize individual ability
and achievement in journalism, to establish relationships between students
and members of the profession and to unite students interested in mass
communications.
Membership
Membership is restricted to those undergraduates possessing good scholarship
and showing promise in the journalistic field. In addition, the Wartburg
chapter requires at least one course in journalism and at least one
year on a student publication or radio staff.
Activities
The chapter publishes the Wartburg College phone directory every fall
as one of its major projects. SCJ also sponsors and organizes a media
careers day for high school students. The day-long workshop gives students
a chance to interact with professionals, alumni and faculty. In addition,
SCJ sponsors a Homecoming Brunch for communications alumni. The chapter
also holds an annual Spring Press Banquet.
History
The Society for Collegiate Journalists is a national co-educational
honorary society for students who are interested in mass communications.
It was formed in 1975 through a merger of two long-established fraternities,
Alpha Phi Gamma and Pi Delta Epsilon. Wartburg's chapter of Alpha Phi
Gamma was chartered in 1949.
