Recent Student Research

Student research project gains wide recognition
A research project undertaken by three Wartburg students won the best undergraduate award at a meeting of the Missouri Valley Economic Association and received honorable mention at the April 2007 National Social Science Association meeting in Las Vegas. Under the direction of Dr. Janice Yee, students Karie Just '07, Stacey Ehlinger '07, and Iana Stahov '08 surveyed the Waverly community to determine factors influencing social capital in the community and how those factors might impact economic development. Their research was funded through a Lilly Public Scholarships Grant and a Maytag-Iowa College Foundation Grant. They also presented their findings at a meeting of the Waverly Rotary Club. Travel funds were provided by undergraduate research funds.

Interdisciplinary Dialogue and Social Capital Measurement: Which Came First?

Faculty Sponsor: Dr. Janice Yee, Professor of Business Administration and Economics

As part of a student-faculty research grant, a small rural community in Iowa was surveyed to gauge the levels and dimensions of social capital. Engaging the local government for help was vital to the survey response, but the team has attempted to pair more deliberately and intentionally with community leaders to help them use the evidence gathered. In doing so, the team has found interdisciplinary dialogue vital to providing city and community leaders with the necessary information and perspective to move forward with the information gathered from the survey. Moreover, the work has begun to spark greater interest in interdisciplinary work among disciplines on campus that would produce a more comprehensive Condition of the City report.

Social Capital and Economic Development

Faculty Sponsor: Dr. Janice Yee, Professor of Economics

Paper presented at the National Social Sciences Association Spring Conference, Las Vegas, Nev.

Defined by Robert Putnam (2000) as the “connections among individuals – social networks and the norms of reciprocity and trustworthiness that arise from them,” social capital has often been considered instrumental in assessing and predicting the ability of a community to experience positive growth, both economically and socially. The extent of a community’s interaction with each other is believed to be a predictor of how well community programs will perform.

This paper will discuss our findings on the relationship between social capital and economic development. We distributed a survey to residents of Waverly, Iowa in order to determine the social capital present. After considering the size and uniformity of the town, we expect to find social capital to be quite high, but we also hope to better understand the complexities of social capital and the role that it plays in the economic development of a community.

Gloria and Katie

Senior Katie Lienau of Fredericksburg, IA, teamed with Prof. Gloria Campbell to research changes in the media and content of the recruiting sections of webpages of the 100 Best Companies to Work For.  They presented to the Association of Business Communication in October 07 (as shown in the attached photo) and the Jan. 08 meeting of the Cedar Valley Chapter of the Society of Human Resource Management in Waterloo.

Several students teamed with Lisa K Smith of LKS Career Connections to survey HR managers in the Cedar Valley.  Their goal was to benchmark the strategic planning issues that HR managers are currently facing.  Their results will be shared with members of the Cedar Valley Society of Human Resource Management.  Participating in the study were seniors Heidi Hesse and Britt Panuska and juniors Sharese VanSloten and Stephanie Wiebel.
