REQUIRED:

  • 1 backpack (book bag) and 1 hip/fanny pack. These will stay with you on plane (CARRY-ON LUGGAGE) and almost everywhere you go in country. Be sure to carry plane ticket/passport/yellow card, one change of clothes, underwear, toothbrush etc.. in the backpack. CARRY YOUR MALARIA MEDS AND ANY PERSONAL MEDS ON THE PLANE. YOU DON'T WANT TO LOSE THEM!
  • One large duffel bags/suitcase. This bag will be checked baggage. Think about picking a partner and switching some of your stuff in their bag a vice versa. Checked bags can be delayed or lost.
  • A 1-1.5 liter water bottle or canteen
  • A sheet (full/twin size(?) to make thin sleeping bag (It does get cool some nights)
  • 50 ft nylon rope for tying up mosquito netting and laundry line

HIGHLY SUGGESTED LIST:

  • Supply of any medicines you need. Pepto-Bismol, Imodium AD, (your choice of pain Med: Aspirin/Tylenol/Advil), decongestants, powder, personal toiletries...including soap on-a-rope, shampoo, toothpaste, Dramamine (anti-nausea), anti-itch cream (hydrocortisone), any DEET (5% or greater) containing insect repellent (Off, Skin So Soft work also, pump spray works best), a few big & small band aids
  • Good Sun block - 2 rolls of toilet paper.
  • 1 plastic trash bags (for trash and to pack clothes in so they don't get wet) - roll of Duct tape (share with a friend)
  • extra batteries for whatever you bring.
  • A rain poncho, not heavy raincoat as it will be hot. One of those el cheapo disposable type OK.
  • Sun glasses
  • Notebook (for journal) and pens (ball point, felt pens will run in the rain).
  • Swiss Army knife (leave in your duffle bag for trip on plane)
  • Camera, film and batteries (we can leave extra batteries behind, they have access to very few).
  • A few granola bars for snacking - decks of cards/UNO deck
  • Flashlight
  • Share a short squatty candle (insect repellent candle?) with a friend
  • 1-2 long sleeve shirts for sun protection and forest hikes - 1 pair long pants, lightweight, buy cheap, for forest hikes
  • 2-3 pair Shorts, nylon shorts
  • A 600 page novel to share
  • Guys: pants (for visits to downtown)
  • Ladies: A wrap-around long skirt (for visits downtown)
  • Frisbee/other sports stuff?
  • T-shirts ..actually what works better is men's short sleeve light shirts that dry quickly!!
  • Socks.
  • A hat or bandana (big handkerchief).
  • 1 nice outfit for return trip (pack in a 2 gallon zip lock bag, only open at the end)
  • Other clothes as you wish remembering you have to carry this stuff.
  • Aqua socks, pool shoes, waterproof sandals
  • At least one pair sneakers
  • Share a small box detergent for washing clothes (usually in a basin)
  • Swimsuit
  • 2 towels/washcloth (remember one will always be wet as nothing dries down there)
  • A red Humvee
