Shelter
Photographs by Liena Vayzman

September 5 – October 7, 2007
Artist Talk and Reception: Friday, September 7, 6–8 p.m.

Liena Vayzman's exhibition Shelter is a socially-engaged art project based on interactive photographic portraits of individuals the artist met at a day shelter for people experiencing homelessness in Chicago.

Shelter includes color portraits and short interviews with individuals, touching on the intersections between health care access, poverty, homelessness, the criminal justice system, as well as photographs of the shelter’s spaces, food service, and human interactions.

The project reflects the artist's interest in images of exhile, transition, and constructions of "home".

Intimate Perceptions
The Paintings of Ami Lahoff and Aaron Bos-Wahl

October 10 – November 7, 2007
Opening Reception: Friday, October 12, 6–8 p.m.

New York Painter Ami Lahoff and Iowa City-based Aaron Bos-Wahl explore themes of intimacy and isolation in their self portraits and paintings of friends and loved ones. Each approaches the intimacy of their subjects as a kind of conversation. Colors become unspoken words, clouding together in auras around the painted figures. This enveloping space becomes the voiced surface of thoughts which alternately can celebrate human connectivity and uncover the solace of isolation.
