Jack R. Ohle became the 16th president
of Wartburg College on July 1, 1998. He has spent 30+ years in
higher education administration. Before accepting the presidency
at Wartburg, he served Drake University as senior vice president
for external affairs and secretary to the university from 1994
to 1998 and as vice president for institutional advancement from
1987 to 1994. He coordinated and directed two major university
fundraising campaigns, one that raised $131 million from 1987
through 1994 and a $190 million campaign that was launched in
1997.
Dr. Ohle has also served as vice
president for institutional advancement at Nebraska Wesleyan University,
Lincoln, Nebraska (1978 to 1987); as director of development and
director of alumni and special programs at Ohio Northern University,
Ada, Ohio (1974 to 1978); and as associate dean of students, director
of freshman counseling, and assistant football coach at Muskingham
College, New Concord, Ohio (1973-1974).
Before his work at Muskingham College,
he was a teacher and head football coach at Riverview High School,
Warsaw, Ohio, and served as a supply pastor for the three congregations
of the Adamsville Parish (LCA), Adamsville, Ohio. He also was
assistant to the dean of students and resident counselor at Wittenburg
University, Springfield, Ohio, and served as a program director
at the Lutheran Church of America Camp in Mansfield, Ohio, while
in seminary.
He graduated from Ohio Northern University with a Bachelor of
Arts degree in social work; did graduate work toward a Master
of Divinity degree at Hamma School of Theology in Springfield,
Ohio; has a Master of Arts degree in higher education administration
from Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio; and
holds an Honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Wartburg Theological
Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa.
Dr. Ohle currently serves as Chair
of the Executive Committee of the Council of Presidents of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Colleges and Universities.
He has been active in the Council for Advancement and Support
of Education (CASE.) He served as Chair of the CASE Board of Trustees
from 2001-2003 and was a member of the Board from 1994 through
2003, also serving as the chair of its Commission on Philanthropy
from 1994 through 1997 and as treasurer from 1998 to 2000. He
received a Distinguished Service Award from CASE District VI in
1998.
Dr. Ohle also currently serves
as Chair of the Iowa College Foundation Board and its Executive
Committee and on the Executive Committee of the Iowa Association
of Independent Colleges and Universities. He was active on the
Nebraska Independent College Foundation President’s Advisory
Council and the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges Advisory
Board, while serving institutions in those states. He was a 1994
recipient of the Outstanding Fundraising Executive Award from
the central Iowa chapter of the National Society of Fundraising
Executives. He also currently serves on the Division III Nominating
Committee of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
His involvement in community organizations
has included service on the board of directors of Central Iowa
Health System, Central Iowa Health System Hospital Corporation,
Health Network of Iowa, Community Focus, Inc., United Way of Central
Iowa, National Life Share Foundation, all in Des Moines, and Goodwill
Industries, Lincoln, Nebraska. He currently serves on the board
of directors of the State Bank of Waverly, Allen Memorial Hospital
and Allen Health Systems, Inc., Waterloo, Iowa Special Olympics,
Tuition Plan Consortium, and recently served on the Board of the
Foundation for Independent Higher Education (FIHE), serving on
its Executive Committee.
He has been an active church member,
serving in leadership roles at Faith Lutheran Church in Des Moines
and First Lutheran Church in Lincoln, Nebraska. Dr. and Mrs. Ohle
are presently members of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly.
He has served as a Boy Scout leader and a Little League and youth
soccer coach.
Dr. Ohle is married to Kirsten
(Kris) Lindquist Ohle and they have three sons: Robert, John,
and Thomas. |
