Study Abroad photo contest entries sought

Oct. 22, 2009

You’ve seen the world with Wartburg College as your guide. Now the Global and Multicultural Studies office wants you to give it your best shots — photos — with some words to go along.

You could win one of five cash prizes.

The Study Aboard Programs Photo-Essay Contest is open to students who have either studied abroad or taken a May Term course offered by Wartburg. The rules are at www.wartburg.edu/gmcs/photocontestrules.pdf, but to summarize:

— The photos submitted must be either 4” x 6” or 3” x 5” unmounted.

— The essay cannot be longer than 200 words, describing your cross-cultural experience. Submit it to kathy.traetow@wartburg.edu. Give it a descriptive title.

— You had to be the photographer, not the model.

— The photo had to be taken during a study abroad or May Term trip offered through Wartburg.

— You can enter three times with a distinct essay to go with each photo, but you’ll max out at one prize.

— The deadline for submissions is Nov. 3.

“Even if the photo isn’t artistic, the essay is a big part of the contest,” said Chelsea Jensen ’10, the student coordinator. “If it is a meaningful essay, it could still win one of the prizes.”

The grand prize is $75 with second and third places earning $50 and $25, respectively, based on the choices of a panel of judges. The photos will reside on the wall outside the Den-Rittersaal, beginning Nov. 6.

But that’s not all.

After viewing all the submissions during a weeklong period, students as well as faculty and staff will vote for their favorites with $50 at stake for the favorite among each of the two groups.

The winners will be announced in The Trumpet and The Page.
