Wartburg College’s Castle Singers and Kammerstreicher will perform Saturday, April 14, in Wartburg Chapel. The concert is a prelude to the ensembles’ international tour in May.

The 4 p.m. performance is open to the public. Free-will donations will be accepted to support local charities.

The Castle Singers, under the direction of Nicki Bakko Toliver, will perform Renaissance madrigal favorites such as Thomas Morley’s “Sing We and Chant It”; “Serenity,” a motet by Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo; and Americana folksongs, including “The King of Love,” “Deep River” and “Daniel, Daniel, Servant of the Lord.”

The performance will also feature Annie Lennox’s “1000 Beautiful Things,” Billy Joel’s “And So It Goes” and Sting’s “Fields of Gold,” as well as a call for social change in Jennifer McMillan’s “Don’t Be Afraid.” In addition, the singers and stringers will collaborate on the premiere performance of Jacob Tews’ setting of Psalm 150.

“The Singers strive to share a uniquely eclectic choral program focused on high artistry and deep meaning. The nature of the chamber ensemble allows us the freedom to pursue a broad spectrum of literature, and we are excited to share this program of art music and pop music with the international listener because of its attention to our American heritage,” Toliver said, referencing the ensemble’s upcoming tour.

Kammerstreicher, under the direction of Tews, will perform a collection of American favorites, including George Gershwin’s “An American in Paris,” Dave Brubeck’s jazz standard “Take Five,” Jay Ungar’s iconic wistful waltz “Ashokan Farewell” and a medley from the award-winning score to “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”
