John Hagstrom from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra will be the featured guest artist at the Wartburg College Trumpet Festival March 15 and 16.

During a Thursday night recital, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Wartburg Chapel, Hagstrom will play “Petite Piece Concertante” by Guillaume Balay and “Orientale” by J. Ed Barat. He will join Scott Muntefering, Wartburg’s Eugene and Ruth Weidler Drape Distinguished Professor in Music, for “The Friendly Rivals” by Chas Godfrey. Wartburg professors James Vaux (trumpet) and Suzanne Torkelson (piano) and the Wartburg Trumpet Choir also will perform during the free recital.

On Friday, a high school Festival Mass Choir, under the direction of Hagstrom and Muntefering, will perform along with the Wartburg Trumpet Choir. The 7 p.m. concert will be in the Wartburg Chapel. Free-will donations will be accepted.

At the finale concert, the Festival Mass Choir will perform “Concert Fanfare” by Eric Ewazen, “Three Nordic Dances” by Vera Horven and “After You’ve Gone” by Henry Creamer and Turner Layton. The Wartburg Trumpet Choir will perform several selections, including “Wartburg Fanfare” by John Wagner and “Ye Banks and Braes O’ Bonnie Doon” by Percy Grainger.

More than 20 high schools from across Iowa and Illinois will participate in the two-day festival founded by Muntefering.
