ICMA awardsWartburg student media won 15 awards at the 2018 Iowa College Media Association annual conference Thursday, Feb. 1, at the Marriott Convention Center in Des Moines.

In the Better Student Television Contest, Compound Productions won first place for Best Short Documentary with “Counter Currents.” Compound Productions group members were Molly Zmudka, Jesse Smith, Dani Gordon, Calyn Thompson, Jesse Kielman and Michael Bowden.

Also in the Best Short Documentary category, Green Bridge Studios won third place for its documentary, “Hidden in the Heartland.” The group was made up of Megan Hoing, Brett Schwickerath, Abby Mahoney, Ellyn Felton, Hannah Hilgenkamp and Kristina Aleksander.

Jordan Thomas and Robert Newell won second place in Best News Programming for their Cedar Valley Today newscast “Christmas on Main” special.

In the Best Sportscasting category, the Knight Vision team of Sam Sides and Jon Mohwinkle won third place (Wartburg vs. Coe volleyball) while Mohwinkle and Josh Voigt received honorable mention for the Wartburg vs. Wisconsin-Eau Claire men’s basketball broadcast.

In the Better Student News Media Contest, which involves print and multimedia outlets, the Wartburg Trumpet won four awards. Hannah Kilburg won first place for Best Sports Photograph and second place for Best News Photograph. Tyler French won third place for Best Headline Writing. Adeboye Olaniyan, Riley Cole and French won third place for Best Online Design.

In the Better Student Radio Contest, KWAR won six awards. Sides won first place for Radio Feature Package with his program, “Music Students Ride Recital Wave,” and French received honorable mention for his program, “The Amsberry Impact.” In the Best News Programming category, Newell won first place for his program on a student May Term film project, and Megan Bridgewater received honorable mention for her program on Dance Marathon.

Also in radio, Mohwinkle and Matt Kerns won second place for Best Sports Broadcast (Wartburg vs. Loras men’s basketball), while French and Kerns received third place in that category for the broadcast of Wartburg vs. Coe baseball.

Wartburg student media outlets are advised by Ron Johnson (Cedar Valley Today), Cliff Brockman (Trumpet) and Pamela Ohrt (KWAR). Ohrt is also executive director of ICMA, which represents 12 colleges and universities around the state.

The annual conference is held in conjunction with the Iowa Newspaper Association.
