More than 350 elite singers, selected by high school choir directors from across the Midwest, as well as the Cedar Falls High School Concert Choir, will perform at Wartburg College’s Meistersinger Honor Choir finale concert Jan. 22. The concert will feature choral works by Cedar Falls native Shawn Kirchner.

The Meistersinger Honor Choir, under the direction of Wartburg’s Lee Nelson and Nicki Toliver, will perform at 7:30 p.m. in Neumann Auditorium on the Wartburg campus. The Wartburg Choir and Castle Singers also will perform. The Cedar Falls choir is directed by Eliott Kranz.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for youth and students with an ID. Tickets can be purchased at www.wartburg.edu/festival or by calling the Wartburg Ticket Office at 319-352-8691. Tickets also will be available at the door.

The concert will include several pieces by Kirchner, the featured guest clinician at the two-day festival and a composer/arranger, singer and pianist who lives in Los Angeles. His choral works have been performed throughout the world. As a singer with the L.A. Master Chorale, Kirchner has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and on the soundtracks of three dozen feature films, including “Avatar,” “La La Land,” “Sing!,” “The Lorax” and the X-Men series.

“I am excited for the high school students to work with a composer who was raised in Iowa and is making a living as a professional musician in Hollywood. Mr. Kirchner’s music and life story will motivate the students to follow their own passions and work to exceed their perceived potential,” Nelson said. “It will be an unbelievable musical and educational experience.”

The Wartburg Choir will perform Kirchner’s “Angel Band” and “Unclouded Day” and the Meistersinger Honor Choir will sing “I’ll Be on My Way,” “O! What a Beautiful City” and “Bright Morning Stars.” Four high school soloists also will be featured at the finale concert.
