Wartburg College has named several new spaces in the McCoy Living and Learning Center.

The Wartburg College Board of Regents approved the naming of common spaces in the living-learning complex in honor of leadership donors.

“Each of these places will bear the name of an enthusiastic supporter of Wartburg College,” said Scott Leisinger, vice president for institutional advancement. “This is a fitting way to honor their commitment to enhancing the residential and educational environment for our students.”

The new student lounge on the first floor will be called the McCaskey Lounge, named after Ray and Judy McCaskey, both 1965 graduates. Ray McCaskey is a former chairman of the board of regents and the retired CEO of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, and Judy McCaskey is a retired teacher from the Chicago area. The couple provided a challenge grant to help finish the fundraising effort for the center.

The new gaming and social lounge on the ground floor will be named the Saemann Lounge. The Franklin I. and Irene List Saemann Foundation kicked off the fundraising effort for the center with a challenge grant. The foundation supports projects in memory of Franklin and Irene List Saemann, granddaughter of Georg Grossmann, the founder of Wartburg College.

The Soenke Classroom will be a multipurpose learning space fitted with modern technology to encourage collaboration between students. It is named after Melvia Soenke, a 1970 graduate, whose gift was made in honor of her parents, Albert and Helen.

Students and faculty can hold intimate film screenings in the new McElroy Theater Room on the ground floor. The theater’s name recognizes a challenge grant by the R.J. McElroy Trust, which supports educational opportunities for students in northeast Iowa in memory of R.J. McElroy, a pioneering Iowa broadcaster.

The second-floor Zimmerman Residence will serve as a home for a faculty member and his or her family. This unique integration of living and learning is named after 1951 graduate Richard O. Zimmerman and his wife, Marge. The Zimmermans, who gave a leadership gift to the project, are also the namesakes of Zimmerman Field at Walston-Hoover Stadium.

The McCoy Living and Learning Center will encompass the renovated Clinton Hall, a residence hall for students built in 1957, and the addition to the building currently under construction.

Additional donations will be accepted through the summer to defray the cost of furnishings. To learn more about the McCoy Living and Learning Center project or to make a gift, call 866-219-9115 or visit www.wartburg.edu/clinton.
