Gremmels Fellowship recipients

Two 2013 Wartburg College graduates are the recipients of the college’s inaugural Robert C. Gremmels Journalism Graduate Fellowship.

Hannah Cox and Kristine Milbrandt Penning can apply the $10,000 fellowship toward their graduate studies in journalism. Cox plans to earn a master’s degree in strategic communication from the University of Iowa, while Penning will work toward a master’s in digital media at the University of Valley Forge in Pennsylvania.

The scholarships were made possible by the Robert C. Gremmels Endowment Fund, created by a $200,000 gift from Harold and Grace Kurtz, Wartburg alumni who graduated in 1958 and 1961, respectively. The fund honors Gremmels, a professor emeritus who served the college from 1960 to 1993 and was the first Wartburg graduate to earn a master’s degree in journalism.

“As a professor, Bob Gremmels has had an immeasurable influence on so many Wartburg students,” said Darrel Colson, Wartburg’s president. “It’s fitting that his legacy will be carried on with this fellowship, which helps students to pursue their shared passion for journalism.”

Wartburg College has made increasing financial aid support a centerpiece of the $75 million Transforming Tomorrow campaign, resulting in new or additional scholarships awarded to 119 students since fundraising began in 2012. This has allowed the college to meet an additional 4 percent of students’ financial need. Fundraising continues as the college aims to secure $37 million in new scholarship support.
