Wartburg College’s Waverly Community Appeal raised more than $5.25 million for the college’s Transforming Tomorrow campaign, surpassing the goal of $5 million.

President Darrel and Christy Colson hosted donors and volunteers Thursday night to announce the total and celebrate the appeal’s success.

“The Waverly community continues to support Wartburg because the college produces global, compassionate, deep, well-educated young people,” Waverly Mayor Chuck Infelt told those gathered at Greenwood, the Colsons’ home.

“Wartburg graduates are the reason we gather tonight, because they are making a difference.”

Wartburg and Waverly’s ties run deep, with 64 percent of the college’s employees living in Waverly and nearly 3,000 alumni living in the Cedar Valley.

“Christy and I have lived in many college towns; the relationship we find here between Waverly and Wartburg is not only uncommon, but extremely rare,” Colson said. “Many things are accomplished because we cooperate, from the Waverly Community Symphony to The W.”

The appeal was led by co-chairs Mike and Darcy Byl, Lindley and Joanne Jones and Dave and Peggy Rathe, all of Waverly. In addition, more than 60 volunteers made calls and visits in the community.

“On behalf of the co-chairs, we would like to thank all Waverly volunteers for saying ‘yes’ when asked to serve,” said Dave Rathe. “Their willingness to volunteer their time, talent and treasure contributed to the appeal’s success.”

Volunteers include: Jeff Beck, Glenn Behrends, Jean and Vern Byl, Darcy and Mike Byl, Alan Charlson, Steve Corson, Barb and Jack Dahlby, Sandi and Terry Dahlquist, Karen and Dennis Dickman, Greg Drewes, Steve Egli, Ryan Frerichs, Sandy Hagemann, Jayne Hall, David Huser, Lou and Chuck Infelt, James Infelt, John Johnston, Joanne and Lindley Jones, Phil Jones, Jayne and Dan Kielman, Audrey and Ed Klamfoth, Darcy and Dan Knights, Reid Koenig, Judi Langholz, Mallory and Casey Luensmann, Paula and Tom Michel, Jeri and Mark Mueller, Kathy and Lynn Olson, Marilyn Pinkley, Krismar and Scott Ramker, Jean and Tom Rasmussen, Ryan Rasmussen, Peggy and Dave Rathe, Mike Sherer, Ron Stahlberg, Jan and Bill Striepe Jr., Sue and Tom Taiber, Barb and Elmon Tatroe, Gloria and Jon Tehven, Marianne Waldstein, and Darold Wolff.
