A Wartburg College student struck gold twice at the Cedar Valley ADDY Awards for advertising, which also recognized nine alumni and a college publication.

Krista Fredricks ’12, a communication arts major from Marathon, won Gold ADDYs — the top prize in a category — in both the student and professional divisions at the annual American Advertising Federation—Cedar Valley contest Feb. 24.

As the world’s largest competition recognizing advertising creativity, the ADDYs generate more than 50,000 entries nationwide, beginning at local contests. Judges’ Citations recogize the best work, Gold ADDYs are awarded for the top prize in a category, and silver signifies outstanding work.

Based on overall points, the Top 15 AAF-Cedar Valley finishers will advance to the regional competition — the last step before nationals — including five entries with Wartburg ties.

Fredricks earned a student Gold ADDY in the Television Single category as writer and producer for an Exceptional Persons Inc. spot entitled “Teddy Bears,” promoting Iowa Child Care Resource & Referral.

She also took home a professional Gold ADDY for Local TV Commercial as writer and assistant producer for OnMedia cable’s spot for 18th Street Vintage and Metro Records in Cedar Falls entitled “Memory Lane.” It was No. 11 among all entries, qualifying for regionals.

Dr. Penni Pier, associate professor and Grant L. Price Department Chair in Communication Arts, lauded the achievements.

“As a department we are thrilled with Krista’s success. She is incredibly talented and is a wonderful representative of our program,” Pier said. “Our alums continue to make us proud, and we could not be happier for them.”

The 2011 Wartburg College Admissions Viewbook produced by ME&V Advertising and Consulting of Cedar Falls was recognized with a Gold ADDY for Magazine Design. Sarah Albertson ’98 was the account executive.

Three alumni received Judges’ Citations, while four have entries bound for regionals.

Monte Bowden ’88, writer/producer, and Brian Foelske ’97, editor, were on the ME&V team honored for Art Direction for Upper Iowa University’s Corridor Campaign, the No. 3 overall entry.

Foelske also was involved with the Gold ADDY-winning Public Service, Mixed Media Campaign for the Cedar Rapids Public Library Foundation Campaign, No. 9 overall, and won three silvers for Local TV commercial (60 seconds or more); National TV, Consumer Services; and Public Service, Audio/Visual
