Wartburg College professor Barbara Fedeler is among the Iowa artists featured in a new exhibit at the University of Iowa’s Old Capitol Museum.

“Art | Iowa: Inspired By Landscape,” celebrating works by Grant Wood, the Meskwakis and contemporary Iowa artists, opens to the public Friday, Feb. 3, in the Hanson Family Gallery. It is a collaboration of the University of Iowa Old Capitol Museum, Museum of Art and Museum of Natural History.

The exhibit explores a wide variety of artworks, focusing on how the Iowa landscape, its people and sense of place influenced Iowa artists as well as the state’s current art culture.

The contemporary Iowa artists featured include Fedeler, an associate professor and chair of the Wartburg art department; John Klopp; Bruce Morrison; Thomas Agran; Judy Bales, and Robert Craig. Interviews with the artists will be featured on a website within the exhibit.

“I have two works curated into the exhibit,” Fedeler said, “a willow charcoal landscape titled ‘South of Fayette’ and an untitled Etch-A-Sketch landscape image. I was also part of a video component, consisting of responses pertaining to the focus on Iowa land, Grant Wood, and teaching in Iowa.”

Among the other works on display are Wood’s “Grandpa with Popcorn,” Morrison’s “Little Sioux Valley,” and a vest and hair pendants created by Meskwaki Nation artists.

An opening reception for the exhibit will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2. Gallery hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday, 1 p.m.-5 p.m. It is closed Mondays and national holidays.
