ETK has added spoken-word artist Shihan to Martin Luther King Jr. Week activities with a performance Friday, Jan. 20.

New York City native Shihan, an MCA Records artist/writer, was the National Poetry Slam champion in 2004 and a three-time finalist. He will perform at 8 p.m. in McCaskey Lyceum.

Shihan has written for the “NBA Jam Session” series, created the theme for Reebok’s “Blacktop” campaign, wrote for the “Schoolhouse Rocks” compilation series and co-wrote one of MTV’s “Rock The Vote” campaigns, “Tic Toc.”

Shihan has appeared seven times on HBO’s “Def Poetry; co-hosted Da’ Poetry Lounge, the nation’s largest open mic in Hollywood for the past eight years, and was a cast member in the Def Poetry Jam 3.0 International Tour. In 2005, Shihan became the first poet to have a poem named iTunes “download of the week.”
