An accounting manager in the Wartburg College Business Office will serve as interim director of the Wartburg-Waverly Sports & Wellness Center.
Sheila Kittleson will step into the vacancy created by the resignation of executive director Jim Langel. After five years at Wartburg, Langel is leaving at the end of October to become CEO of the YMCA of Black Hawk County in Waterloo.
“Sheila understands the business operations of The W and has experience managing a professional staff,” said Gary Grace, vice president for administration. “She is also a regular user of the facility.”
Kittleson, who earned an accounting degree from Mankato State University, joined the Wartburg staff in 2007 after 10 years as a cost analyst manager, team leader and senior project analyst at CUNA Mutual Insurance Group in Waverly.
Langel joined the staff in January 2007, when The W was still under construction. He played an integral role in establishing policies and procedures, hiring staff and procuring equipment for the facility, which opened to the community in January 2008.
“Leaving Wartburg and The W was not an easy decision, but I felt that it was what was best for my family and for my career,” said Langel, who lives in Cedar Falls. “The collaboration between Wartburg and Waverly to create this wonderful building was a great move for both the college and the community. Its facilities and programs are top-notch, and everyone should be proud of what has been accomplished.”
